Visceral Manipulation

VISCERAL MANIPULATION

Visceral Manipulation was developed by world-renowned French Osteopath and Physical Therapist Jean-Pierre Barral. This Manual Therapy approach addresses functional and structural imbalances throughout the body including musculoskeletal, vascular, nervous, urogenital, respiratory, digestive and lymphatic dysfunction. At times, a primary cause of musculoskeletal dysfunction can be an internal organ. In certain cases, it’s better to work from inside out, than outside in or to combine treatments for a holistic approach.

Visceral Manipulation works with the organs and the fascia, or connective tissue, that holds the organs in place. Each organ moves in relationship with the others, and when one stops working correctly, it can affect the whole body. Strains in the connective tissue can result from surgical scars, injury, poor posture, or illness, which cause the organs to become restricted. Such restrictions can create a cascade of effects far from their sources for which the body must compensate. This chronic irritation can result in functional and structural problems. By using Visceral Manipulation, the therapist can address one of the main contributing factors of dysfunction and pain.

Visceral Manipulation relies on the palpation of normal and abnormal forces within the body to identify and correct visceral dysfunction. These gentle manipulations can potentially improve the functioning of individual organs, the systems the organs function within, and the structural integrity of the entire body. Our therapists who specialize in Visceral Manipulation are highly trained by the Barral Institute. We use Visceral Manipulation as one of our specialties to provide the best care to our patients.

When would Visceral Manipulation be included in my treatment plan?

Visceral Manipulation is one of the many techniques offered by Healing Hands Therapists as part of your treatment plan. Depending on your condition, visceral manipulation may be the main focus of your session or it may be one part of your overall treatment plan. Sometimes when the physical therapist finds resistance while treating a musculoskeletal issue, by using visceral manipulation techniques, the therapist can release the restrictions of fascia that are related to the internal organs and in doing so can achieve better results treating musculoskeletal issues.
